Employment/Academic Goals:
A career in concordance with my desire for lifelong learning, possessed of variety, stimulation, and change. More specifically, a career with opportunities to teach as well as be taught, with a focus on computing but not limited to such. This includes vocations in training, PC/LAN support, and technical writing. Travel, project management, and multilingualism are all welcome additions.

IT On-Site Support Representative, '06-'08
San Diego Unified School District ; San Diego, California
Served as a liaison between SDUSD's central office and school sites, providing on-site training and support primarily for the district's student information system, Zangle. Additional duties included documentation, small-scale project management, quality assurance, query writing, data analysis, and gentle enforcement of school policies.
Primary ESL Teacher, '04-'06
Kid Castle Educational Corporation; Xindian, Taiwan
Though Chinese studies took priority, I also undertook a part-time job teaching English to Taiwanese children ranging from 6 to 16 years of age. As the branch's only foreign teacher, I often developed curriculum, created assessment tools and spreadsheets, and availed of computer-based education.
ESL Kindergarten Teacher, '02-'04
Kang Qiao Bilingual Primary School (Kang Qiao) ; Xindian, Taiwan
Kindergarten teacher for a pilot school testing coursework for CBS'
parent company, a publisher of literature used by nearly 80% of the
English-teaching schools in Taiwan. This job was secured concurrent
with the opening of the school, and I was given a rare opportunity to
be involved in the school's overarching curriculum and development.
The job entailed:
- The dedicated teaching of one class of 20 Chinese students exclusively
in English
- Working side-by-side with a Chinese co-teacher
- Close contact with other staff members in the development and direction
of the kindergarten curriculum
- Extensive involvement in planning and creation of winter and summer
camp programming
- Rudimentary administration of the kindergarten department computers
- Development of an online database using PHP, MySQL, and Apache,
which served as a collection point for electronic materials, a repository
for teaching tips, and an overarching bulletin-board system to air
meeting agenda topics and post announcements.
- Serving on a committee developing standardized assessment tests for entrance into Cambridge's first grade
ESL Tutor, '01-'02
American English Institute, University
of Oregon; Eugene, Oregon
The American English Institute (AEI) is a program residing in the University
of Oregon which teaches English through immersion and intensive instruction
to students attending from all over the world. One component of the
program is tutoring, wherein the student meets regularly to discuss
basic English concepts, paper writing, the TOEFL, or simply to chat
and gain English proficiency. I tutored students on subjects ranging
from the most basic of English grammar to the development of a thesis
for advanced paper-writing.
Graduate Teaching Fellow, '99-'02
Wired Humanities Project, University
of Oregon; Eugene, Oregon
The Wired Humanities Project was
created with the goal of facilitating the faculty of any Humanities
department with electronic publishing, organizing, and presentation
of otherwise conventional media such as books, video and cassette tapes.
Duties for the job included:
- Consulting with faculty for creation of departmental and specialized
project websites.
- Instruction of faculty and graduate students on the use of HTML,
website software and design.
- Close interaction with the Center
for Studies of Women in Society, including the implementation
and administration of an NT Server and data backup solution.
- Administration of a webserver hosting multiple websites.
- Supervision of undergraduate employees.
- Day-to-day hardware troubleshooting and fire-fighting.
Technical Specialist, '96-'99
Orcom Solutions; Bend, Oregon
Orcom Solutions provided highly customized software for utility companies,
ranging from small county operations to nationwide providers. As a technical
specialist, my duties involved support of all third-party components
that our software utilized, and provided a great deal of in-house support.
The most important of these tasks were:
- Project management, including travelling on training and installation
trips to various clients involving the instruction and implementation
of new or updated meter reading systems.
- Answering client support calls encompassing a variety of platforms
and networks.
- In-house network and server administration for Novell, AS/400, NT,
and Cisco systems.
- Database design and programming for Lotus Notes.
- Authorship of company white papers and announcements, website design
and coordination.
- Hardware and software troubleshooting and installation.
- Documentation of procedures and producing network diagrams.
User Consultant, '93-'96
Grinnell College Computing Services;
Grinnell, Iowa
Served for three (academic) years at Grinnell
College responding to queries and problems encountered by users
in the college computer labs. I staffed labs that used PCs, Macintoshes,
and UNIX (HP-UX) machines.
Student Intern, '94
Eurotunnel; Cheriton, Britain
Interned for 5 weeks with such projects as adapting an Excel database
from the French branch of the tunnel to the English branch, optimizing
use of the communication ports, and occasional filing and sorting of
documents.
